MORGANTOWN —
At 5-5, a lot of West Virginia University football fans have written this year off already and are starting to look ahead at next year.
Now they know what they are looking at as the Mountaineers’ 2013 schedule was announced Tuesday with six games being played at home, six on the road.
“I am pleased that our 2013 football schedule is ready so that our fans can have plenty of time to make plans,” athletic director Oliver Luck said. “It will be our second year in the Big 12, and once again new faces will be coming to Milan Puskar Stadium, while we make our first visit to some new road locations as well. As with any Big 12 schedule, challenging and exciting are two words that come to mind.”
The season opens on Aug. 31 with William & Mary coming to Mountaineer Field.
The home conference schedule includes Oklahoma State (Sept. 28), Texas Tech (Oct. 19), Texas (Nov. 9) and Iowa State (Nov. 29/30).
Road conference games include Oklahoma (Sept. 7), Baylor (Oct. 5), Kansas State (Oct. 26), TCU (Nov. 2) and Kansas (Nov. 16).
“I think the schedule provides a good mix of home and away games in each month, which will be beneficial to our team and fans,” WVU football coach Dana Holgorsen said in a release put out by the school. “We all know how difficult the competition is in the Big 12. This schedule will once again be very challenging for our program.”
The Mountaineers begin Big 12 Conference play against Oklahoma at Norman, on Sept. 7. This marks the fifth meeting between the two schools and the third game in Norman.
West Virginia will face first-time FBS opponent Georgia State for a first-ever meeting in Morgantown on Sept. 14, before traveling to Baltimore, Md., to face Maryland in the annual border war on Sept. 21, at M&T Bank Stadium.
The Mountaineers close out September with their conference home opener against Oklahoma State on Sept. 28. This marks the Cowboys’ second visit to Morgantown and first since 1928.
West Virginia then opens the month of October with a first-ever road trip to Waco, Texas, to face Baylor, before an open week on Oct. 12.
The Mountaineers will celebrate homecoming on Oct. 19 against Texas Tech, in the Red Raiders’ first-ever trip to Morgantown. WVU will close out the month of October, making its first trip to Manhattan, Kan., on Oct. 26 to face Kansas State.
Opening the month of November, the Mountaineers make their first-ever trip to Fort Worth, Texas, to face TCU.
West Virginia will celebrate Mountaineer Week on Nov. 9, playing host to Texas. This will mark the Longhorns’ first trip to Morgantown and third meeting in the series that dates back to 1956. The Mountaineers make their first-ever trip to Lawrence, Kan., to face Kansas on Nov. 16.
After a week off on Nov. 23, West Virginia closes out its regular season at home, hosting Iowa State on either Nov. 29 or Nov. 30, for Senior Day.
The times and television schedule will be announced at a later time. All dates are subject to change.
