The West Virginia women’s basketball team was picked to finish in a tie for second place this season in the Big 12 preseason poll, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
The Mountaineers received one first-place vote and tied with Oklahoma for 65 points. Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite for the fourth straight year and fifth time in conference history.
The Lady Bears received nine of 10 first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team) after capturing both the Big 12 regular season and postseason titles a year ago.
Following Oklahoma and West Virginia, Kansas landed fourth and Texas was fifth. The remaining places were: 6. Iowa State, 7. Oklahoma State, 8. Texas Tech, 9. Kansas State and 10. TCU.
The Big 12 has produced the last two national champions with Baylor capturing the title in 2012 behind the nation’s first 40-0 record. Oklahoma State completed a postseason title sweep for the Big 12 by winning the WNIT.
The Big 12 has ranked No. 1 in conference RPI for the past five seasons and has led the nation in attendance 13 consecutive years.

The West Virginia women’s basketball Hoops ‘n Heels group is hosting a clinic and tipoff luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the WVU Coliseum.
In its third season with the Mountaineers, Hoops ‘n Heels is a program that allows women to network, socialize with, support and mentor the women’s basketball players.
Those in attendance will have the chance to sit in on a women’s basketball practice with a question and answer session with coach Mike Carey. They will also have the opportunity to interact with the 2012-13 women’s basketball team over lunch. In addition to activities in the Coliseum, there will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the newly opened WVU basketball practice facility.
