CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fewer than 10,000 tickets are available for the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl, it was announced Friday by bowl officials.
More than 63,000 tickets have already been sold for this year’s game between the University of North Carolina and the West Virginia University Mountaineers.
The 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl will take place on Saturday, Dec. 27 at Bank of America Stadium with a 1 p.m. kickoff. It is televised nationally on ESPN.
“The buzz surrounding tickets for this year’s game has been extraordinary,” said Will Webb, executive director. “North Carolina and West Virginia fans are really going to make this a fun, festive football experience. And the game itself should be very exciting. We can’t wait to see all the fans turn out for the RBC Bank Street Festival and Pep Rally on Friday, Dec. 26. We know the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl will be a special time for everyone involved.”
Tickets are available through TicketMaster and the participating schools.
The Meineke Car Care Bowl has averaged more than 60,000 fans during its first six years, with two sellouts. It has reached more than 13.5 million television households. In 2003, it was named one of the five best start-ups in sports over the past five years by the Sports Business Journal, behind only the NFL Houston Texans and ESPN the Magazine.
The inaugural game, played on Dec. 28, 2002 before a sold-out stadium, saw Virginia defeat West Virginia, 48-22. On Dec. 27, 2003, Virginia once again claimed victory, this time over Pitt, 23-16. The third year again produced a sellout, as Boston College defeated North Carolina, 37-24, on Dec. 30, 2004. N.C. State defeated South Florida, 14-0, on Dec. 31, 2005. Boston College defeated Navy 25-24, on a field goal as time expired on Dec. 30, 2006. And last year, Wake Forest defeated UConn, 24-10 on December 29, 2007.
