MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University is mourning the loss of a former football coach who recruited the school's first black players.
The school said today that Earl Eugene Corum, head coach from 1960 to 1965, died Jan. 2 in Frederick, Md. He was 88.
The Huntington native played at WVU in the 1940s, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He also coached two years at Point Marion High School in Pennsylvania before joining the Mountaineers as an assistant coach in 1950.
He compiled a 29-30-2 record at WVU and led the Mountaineers to two Southern Conference championships.
After his coaching career ended, Mr. Corum became a teacher and administrator. He served as professor, acting dean of the physical education school and acting athletic director.
Plans for a memorial service in Morgantown are being made.
