W.Va. officials say one death attributed to storm

CHARLESTON — West Virginia officials say a traffic accident that killed a woman was caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s spokeswoman Amy Shuler Goodwin said Monday that authorities believe about 5 inches of snow had fallen in the area of Tucker County where the crash occurred, making roads treacherous.

The victim is a 40-year-old woman who was driving a car that collided with the cement truck. A 17-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries. Goodwin did not have names for either person, or a gender for the teen.

Tomblin declared a state of emergency Monday as the storm approached, bringing rain and strong winds and threatening to dump up to 3 feet of snow in some of the state’s higher elevations.

West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Jimmy Gianato said conditions likely would be at their worst overnight and early Tuesday before the storm moves on.
