CHARLESTON —
Fewer gambling dollars are flowing into West Virginia’s coffers. But the decline isn’t as large as officials projected.
The West Virginia Lottery’s August revenues totaled $116.3 million, a $2.6 million decline from August 2011. Lottery officials had projected the month’s revenue would total $97.4 million.
They also projected a $20 million drop in revenues from the state’s four racetrack casinos. But this revenue was down about $3.6 million.
The figures were released Tuesday during a Lottery Commission meeting in Charleston.
Lottery Director John Musgrave told the commission that officials assumed West Virginia’s racetrack casinos would lose customers to new casinos in Ohio. But he says the Ohio casinos haven’t begun operations as fast as expected.
