CHARLESTON —
A memorial service was held Sunday in Charleston for one of two West Virginia state troopers shot and killed last week.
Friends, family and law enforcement officers from as far away as Las Vegas and Alaska turned out Sunday for the memorial at the Charleston Civic Center for Cpl. Marshall Bailey.
Police say Bailey and Eric Michael Workman were shot by a 22-year-old Oak Hill man who pulled a handgun hidden in his pants as he sat in the backseat of a cruiser. Gunman Luke Baber was killed in the shootout.
A funeral procession followed Bailey’s service. Services are planned later this week for Workman, who died later of his injuries.
Dr. Justin Bailey, the slain trooper’s brother, said he loved working in Clay County and being a state trooper.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin called Bailey and Workman both heroes. Tomblin said Bailey put his own safety at risk for 17 years to help others.
