FAIRMONT — At long last, North Marion boys’ basketball has its signature win.
On the road for the first time this season and in a hostile environment at the Woody Williams Amory, the Huskies didn’t let much of anything faze them Thursday night as they held on for a 77-74 overtime upset over host Fairmont Senior.
“It’s an awesome win,” North senior forward Matt Cain said.
Not to mention a victory those along the Husky Highway have been waiting for — in all, it marks the first win for the program over Fairmont Senior in four years and the first on the Polar Bears’ home floor since the 2005-06 season.
And the kind of win North has been slowly building toward from the day coach Chris Freeman was hired five years ago.
“It’s a big step for the program,” Freeman said of the win. “It’s what we’ve been working for, but at the same time we want them to understand we’re climbing that ladder and we want them playing well when it comes down to March.”
