Fairmont Freeze brings lacrosse to middle school level

FAIRMONT — It’s often said that success starts from the ground up, but until recently that wasn’t the case with Fairmont Senior lacrosse.

Many Polar Bear high school players, boys and girls, hadn’t touched a stick or donned a helmet before their first practice of freshman year. And while it didn’t stop both programs from reaching the highest of highs — a combined five WVSLA state titles, including the girls’ current run of four straight championships — a feeder program would be needed in time.

Enter Tony Stingo.

The Marion County native did not have a child old enough to play lacrosse for the Polar Bears. Nor did he have much experience in the sport — “I played box lacrosse in the summers and that’s really it. I’ve never been part of a field team,” he said.

    Fairmont Senior rallied for four runs in the sixth inning while advancing their way to the state tournament yet again with a 4-0 victory over John Marshall in the Class AAA Region I final on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park.

    The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are riding plenty of momentum into today’s Region I baseball final versus John Marshall.
    The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
