East second in Big 10 cheerleading event: PHOTOS

PLEASANT VALLEY — School spirit was at a max at East Fairmont High School on Wednesday evening.

A near-capacity crowd filled East Fairmont's gym for the Big 10 cheerleading competition, where nine teams converged doing both group cheers and dance routines.

At the end of the event, Robert C. Byrd took home first place, with a score of 343.25, while East was the close runner-up with a team combined score of 341.75

“The team unity was their (RCB) strong point,” said East head coach Karen Beckman. “They worked a long time on their technique and their builds, and I think that shows they performed their builds with strength.”

Beckman continues, “We worked on our cheer for tonight after coming in third at regionals. That really paid off for us; (however, we needed) to work on (our) tumbling a little, but other than that they did everything the way I told them.”

Lewis County came in third place with a score of 312.8, while North Marion notched fourth with a score of 293.65 — after a really strong routine that was only flawed by a girl coming down on a base’s ankle leading to her being taken to the hospital with a possible bone fracture.

“I think they did really well until the end when the girl came down on one of our base’s ankle,” said North’s head coach Ronda Smith.

“They all got up and finished the routine like they were taught. It just proves what kind of squad we have — they’re strong, tough girls and very hard working, I’m proud of them.”

While the points were being totaled, the cheerleaders and spectators were treated to a demonstration by Fairmont State’s acrobatics and tumbling team.

East Fairmont and North Marion will continue action in the state competition held at the Charleston Civic Center on Dec. 8.
