FAIRMONT —
We’re in the second week of the high school football season and there are already some surprises, both good and bad.
Fairmont Senior was the only Marion County team to open with a win in 2010, something not many thought the Polar Bears would be able to do against a Robert C. Byrd team that had plenty of returning talent.
But Trevor Malnick made the most of his debut as Polar Bear quarterback and led FSHS to a win, the first under new head coach Jared Mileto.
“Let’s face it, that kid probably had the biggest hole to fill and he came in and he filled it for us to win,” Mileto said. “He gives 110 percent every time he takes that ball and every time he makes a read.
“That first quarter, he was a little jittery, a little excited. But in the second, third and fourth, he calmed down a lot.”
Also aiding in the victory was the emergence of junior running back Trevor Link.
