FAIRMONT —
We’re in the second week of the high school football season and there are already some surprises, both good and bad.
Fairmont Senior was the only Marion County team to open with a win in 2010, something not many thought the Polar Bears would be able to do against a Robert C. Byrd team that had plenty of returning talent.
But Trevor Malnick made the most of his debut as Polar Bear quarterback and led FSHS to a win, the first under new head coach Jared Mileto.
“Let’s face it, that kid probably had the biggest hole to fill and he came in and he filled it for us to win,” Mileto said. “He gives 110 percent every time he takes that ball and every time he makes a read.
“That first quarter, he was a little jittery, a little excited. But in the second, third and fourth, he calmed down a lot.”
Also aiding in the victory was the emergence of junior running back Trevor Link.

Friday night was a prime example of the type of game you need to be able to win if you want to go far once tournament time rolls around.

North, East honor worthy causes
On the field or on the court, Marion County’s three high schools are always intense rivals.
Perhaps that intensity is what has helped build a bond between the schools outside of sports, and that sense of community was on display at North Marion High School on Friday. -
Huskies pull away late, down Bees: VIDEO AND PHOTOS
It was Senior Night for the North Marion Huskies, and senior Paige Tuttle came up big in her final regular-season game in front of the home crowd.

Bridgeport blasts Bears: VIDEO AND PHOTOS
It has been a bad week to be a Polar Bear, especially on the basketball court against teams from Harrison County.
Robert C. Byrd upset the Fairmont Senior boys on Wednesday, and Thursday was not much better for the Bears. Bridgeport, the No. 2-ranked girls’ team in Class AAA, visited Fairmont and left the Friendly City with a 75-34 win against No. 7 Fairmont Senior. -
COLUMN: Huskies to raise money for cancer
One way or another, we’ve all been touched by cancer.
And while there is no cure in sight, that doesn’t — and won’t — stop people from fighting for the cause.
Tonight, it is the North Marion boys’ basketball team’s turn. -

Bridgeport thumps North boys: VIDEO AND PHOTOS
The No. 9 North Marion boys’ basketball team did not have much going for it Wednesday.
The Huskies turned the ball over, missed shots, missed rebounds. You name it, and if it hurts a team’s chance at winning a basketball game, the Huskies probably did it Wednesday against Bridgeport. -
