RACHEL — For all football teams, a fast start is key to having a winning season.

Two games in, a fast start has been the key for Fairmont Senior.

Using another strong first-half defensive performance and some huge plays on offense Friday, Fairmont Senior built a big lead and held on to beat Marion County rival North Marion, 28-20, at Husky Field.

The victory continued the Polar Bears’ recent run of dominance in the series — they haven’t lost to the Huskies since 2003 — and moved them to 2-0 on the year.

“I’m very pleased with the guys,” Fairmont Senior first-year coach Jared Mileto said of his squad, which is ranked No. 8 in this week’s Charleston Daily Mail prep football poll. “They’ve responded well. They’ve worked hard, and at the same time we know there’s more to work to get even better.”

If the first two games are any indication, Fairmont Senior can’t get much better early in games, particulary defensively.
