Trefz leads FSHS to Big 10 championship

FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior’s boys’ cross country team rolled during the Big Ten championships on Thursday.

Leading the way for the Polar Bears was Nick Trefz, who placed first with the time of 15:55.22.

Because of his performance, along with the rest of the Polar Bear runners, the team finished with a total of 50 points, which was three fewer points than Philip Barbour, which placed second with a team combined score of 53.

Key contributors for the Polar Bears were Jakeb Van Horn, who tallied a time of 17:34.18 that led to 10th place; Elijah Tipton (17) 18:08.12; Matt Strand (18) 18:14.88; Drew Trefz (19) 18:17.22; Josh McPherson (20) 18:17:68; Josh Parrucci (21) 18:20.12; Justin Okel (23) 18:28.47; Zack Linger (27) 18:43.94; Michael Bounaiuto (40) 19:10.78; Jonah Freeland (44) 19:26.53; Dalton Okel (47) 19:33.25; Logan Ralston (51) 19:59.75; and Gavin Evans (55) 20:12.06.

East Fairmont placed fifth with a team score of 116.

Leading the way for the Bees was Jack DeVault, who placed 14th with a time of 17:53.56.

Other contributors for the Bees were Drew Arnett (25) 18:40.81;  Brandon Akers (32) 18:58.94; Jacob Morris (37) 19:05.12; and Jacob Nuzum (48) 19:34.06.

North Marion had a good performance from Alex Myers, who placed 35th with the time of 19:03.56.

A pair of Huskies that placed in the top 60 were Evan Gaines (57) 20:13.59, and Drew Burkett (59) 20:26.56.

All three Marion County girls’ cross country teams placed in the top eight during Thursday’s Big Ten Championship.

Placing in fourth place was North Marion, with a combined team score of 109. East Fairmont placed fifth with a score of 128 and Fairmont Senior rounded out the top eight with a score of 199.

Leading the way for the Huskies was Emma Harrison, who notched second place with a time of 19:36.34. Harrison was just 36 seconds behind Preston’s Kaitlyn Workman, who placed in first with a time of 19:00.91.

The Bees’ Brenda Palmer finished in ninth place with a time of 21:07.72, and the top runner for Fairmont Senior was Bethany McPherson, who placed 38th with a time of 23:48.72.

Area teams will take part in the Class AA-A Region I meet at Doddridge County Park on Thursday.
