FAIRMONT —
Incredible. Crazy. Instant classic.
Those were just a few of the words used to describe Fairmont Senior’s sectional final versus crosstown rival East Fairmont on Saturday night. And in this case, a little hyperbole was warranted, as Justin Sloan’s header with 26 seconds left lifted the Polar Bears to a 1-0 double overtime victory.
It was the thrilling capper on a day of twin titles for FSHS soccer. Earlier on Saturday at East-West Stadium, the Polar Bear girls’ team doubled up the Bees, 4-2.
The win, which moved Fairmont Senior’s boys to 13-5-4, capped a season sweep of No. 3-ranked East. It also returned the program to a familiar place, as sectional champions after a one-year hiatus.
Fairmont Senior’s boys will host Weir, a 3-0 winner over Tyler Consolidated in Saturday’s other regional game, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
