For the seven seniors that dot the Fairmont Senior girls’ lacrosse roster, winning is all they’ve ever known.
The group were members of West Virginia’s first state title-winning team as freshmen in 2008. They became back-to-back champs the next season, and made it three straight this past spring.
Saturday night at Bridgeport’s Wayne Jamison Field, Fairmont Senior made it a four-peat, winning its fourth consecutive WVSLA crown with a dominating 13-5 victory over Buckhannon-Upshur.
“This is a great group of kids, and they love playing the game,” Fairmont Senior coach Jon Cain said. “You know when kids are emotional about their last game they’re enjoying what they’re doing, and that’s the way it’s been with this group.”

While quite a few of Fairmont Senior’s girls’ lacrosse players are playoff veterans, the butterflies were still swarming going into last Saturday’s WVSLA state title game.

The Polar Bears are making their ninth trip to Charleston in the past 10 seasons after a nail-biting, 4-0 win over John Marshall in the Region I final game on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park. -

The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2. -
