FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Senior boys’ lacrosse team split a home doubleheader Saturday, rolling past Herbert Hoover 12-6 and falling to George Washington 8-5.
The Polar Bears had little trouble in game one. They led Herbert Hoover 6-2 at halftime and added goals from Steve Cox and Jordan Ross to make it an 8-2 game barely four minutes into the third period.
Herbert Hoover added three scores in the fourth to draw closer but never got to within five goals of Fairmont Senior.
Game two, however, was a different story altogether.
Top defender Dillon Leeson and offensive standout David Heck did not play in the nightcap — Leeson suffered a leg injury in the first game, while Heck was battling an illness — and their absences hurt the Polar Bears.
George Washington led 5-1 after the first period and added another goal in the second to take control.
“It was hard without those two,” Fairmont Senior coach Jarrott Brodgon said.
The Polar Bears closed the gap slightly after halftime, as the team found its offense. Louie Romano scored two goals and had two assists. Ross added two goals and Cox chipped in another score.
In the opener, Romano and Ross each netted four goals, and Cox added two tallies.
Fairmont Senior is off for a week and will return to action Tuesday, April 13 at Linsly.
