Bears top JM; East falls to Red Dragons
PLEASANT VALLEY — Fairmont Senior’s girls’ basketball team got its biggest win of the season Wednesday night in the final game of the 2009 Game Time Athletics Holiday Shootout at East Fairmont High School.
The Polar Bears got 25 points from Kaitlinn O’Neal and 20 points from Brooklyn Little as they held off the previously unbeaten John Marshall Monarchs, 72-65.
That made FSHS the de facto winner of the tournament, finishing with a 2-0 record.
“I thought in the second half that we wanted it a little bit more,” Fairmont Senior head coach Ashley Reed said. “John Marshall is a very good team and right now all our girls are giving 110 percent on the floor.”

North girls win second Class AAA title
North Marion girls’ basketball team spends a lot of their time at practice running and conditioning.
And it’s paid off with their second straight Class AAA state title.
North ran past No. 2 South Charleston, 58-45, in the second half Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center to become the first Class AAA team to repeat since those same Black Eagles did it in 2003 and 2004.

The big orange letters on the freshly printed T-shirts worn by Summers County’s players after the Bobcats’ fourth straight Class AA championship said it all: Dynasty.
Hallie Gunnoe scored 31 points to lead top-seeded Summers County to a 58-50 win over No. 2 Scott on Saturday.

St. Joseph rolls in Class A final
St. Joseph’s experience proved to be too much for St. Marys in the girls Class A championship game.
Brooke Keeton scored 15 points, Stephanie Dorsey added 13 and St. Joseph never trailed in earning its second straight title with a 58-44 win over cold-shooting St. Marys on Saturday.

Huskies rally past Huntington
The North Marion Huskies have reached the state championship game for the second year in a row.
The top-seeded Lady Huskies overcame a poor-shooting first half to dispatch budding rival Huntington in Friday night’s Class AAA semifinal game, 61-50.

South Charleston beats Pats in semis
Keke Allen scored nine of her 15 points in the first quarter and South Charleston cruised to a 60-50 win over Parkersburg South in the girls Class AAA semifinals Friday night.
Second-seeded South Charleston (25-1) will meet defending champion North Marion (23-1) for the title on Saturday night.

COLUMN: One basket not kind to Huskies
Maybe it’s just the wrong end of the floor for North Marion’s girls’ basketball team.
For two games in a row, the Huskies have struggled shooting at the left basket, if you are sitting behind the North bench, no more than Friday’s semifinal matchup with Huntington.

Up next for No. 1 North Marion is the Huntington Highlanders, the same team the Huskies beat for their first state title last season.

Byard Gatorade W.Va. player of year
Mariah Byard added to a stellar season Thursday, as the North Marion standout was named the Gatorade West Virginia girls’ basketball player of the year.
Byard is the second Huskies player to win the award, joining Jessica Sell in 2002.
