PREP ROUNDUP: Polar Bears bash Huntington, 7-0
To be honest, Fairmont Senior boys’ soccer coach Jim DeNardi entered Saturday’s game with Huntington expecting a grind-it-out, low-scoring result that is usually the norm when two good teams meet.
Turns out, he was in for a surprise — the good kind. -
Big first half helps push Polar Bears past Huskies
For all football teams, a fast start is key to having a winning season.
Two games in, a fast start has been the key for Fairmont Senior.
Using another strong first-half defensive performance and some huge plays on offense Friday, Fairmont Senior built a big lead and held on to beat Marion County rival North Marion, 28-20, at Husky Field. -
UHS rolls over East in 59-28 win
University came into Friday night’s game ranked among the top Class AAA teams in the state.
It didn’t take long for the Hawks to prove those lofty numbers right.
UHS marched down the field and scored before many East-West Stadium attendees had even found their seat and followed it up with an interception return on East’s third play of the game to take a 14-0 lead and never look back as the Hawks routed the Bees, 59-28. -
McVicker eyes state title as senior
There are athletes who enjoy what they do.
Then there are athletes like Dayton McVicker who go the extra mile.
No, make that miles. Lots of them.
“This week was a 60-mile week,” Fairmont Senior boys’ cross country coach Chris Neptune said of his standout senior runner. -
FSHS visits North; East hosts UHS
A pair of big games are scheduled for tonight as Fairmont Senior visits North Marion for the first leg of the Marion County championship battle and East Fairmont tries to rebound against a highly rated University team.
Fairmont Senior travels to Rachel to take on the Huskies and hopes to build on last week’s victory over Robert C. Byrd. -
COLUMN: Breakout performances in Week 1
We’re in the second week of the high school football season and there are already some surprises, both good and bad.
Fairmont Senior was the only Marion County team to open with a win in 2010, something not many thought the Polar Bears would be able to do against a Robert C. Byrd team that had plenty of returning talent.
But Trevor Malnick made the most of his debut as Polar Bear quarterback and led FSHS to a win, the first under new head coach Jared Mileto. -
Senior leadership
There’s been nothing easy for North Marion’s football team the past couple of years, and that includes quarterback Shaun McCoy.
McCoy is in his senior season as the quarterback of the Huskies and the only returning starting quarterback among the Marion County teams. -

Flying start
Really, Trevor Malnick’s job as Fairmont Senior quarterback isn’t all that complicated.
He doesn’t need to throw for thousands upon thousands of yards. He isn’t asked to put the Polar Bears on his back. And he certainly isn’t expected to be Jarrod Furgason, Logan Moore or any other great FSHS signal caller who has dug his cleats into the East-West Stadium turf. - More Prep Sports Headlines
