BRIDGEPORT — For one week, Bridgeport’s football calling card took a back seat.
No, the vaunted Indian rushing attack wasn’t held in check during Saturday’s Class AAA quarterfinal with No. 6 George Washington. Rather, it was overshadowed by the team’s dominating defensive performance in a 31-0 whitewash at Wayne Jamison Field.
Third-seeded Bridgeport (12-0) held the Patriot offense to 84 yards, 17 in the second half, and in the process moved a step closer to the state title game.
The Indians play No. 2 South Charleston, a 38-28 winner over No. 7 Martinsburg Friday, in the upcoming semifinal round. It is the first time they’ve reached the state’s final four since moving up from Class AA in 2004.
