Paving the way: Polar Bears’ O-line comes up big on late drives
FAIRMONT — Talk to Fairmont Senior center Christian Cummings about his teammates along the offensive line, and he’ll mention what a close-knit group they are. How they’re all good friends, and how that closeness must transfer to a playing field where the guy lined up on the other side is often 30 pounds heavier.
Lacking in size, the Polar Bear O-line makes their hay elsewhere. With technique, footwork and perhaps most importantly, an unwavering confidence in themselves.
“We have faith in the line,” Cummings said.

Huskies, Highlanders to meet again in state tourney
The Class AAA girls’ state semifinals will feature a rematch of last season’s state championship game.
Up next for No. 1 North Marion is the Huntington Highlanders, the same team the Huskies beat for their first state title last season.

Byard Gatorade W.Va. player of year
Mariah Byard added to a stellar season Thursday, as the North Marion standout was named the Gatorade West Virginia girls’ basketball player of the year.
Byard is the second Huskies player to win the award, joining Jessica Sell in 2002.

Huntington slides past Martinsburg
Talequia Hamilton scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half to lead Huntington to a 56-43 win over Martinsburg in the girls Class AAA quarterfinals Thursday.
Hamilton also had 14 rebounds. Leah Ching led fourth-seeded Huntington (18-4) with 19 points and Erin Bailes had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

North girls catch fire after half, rout Ripley in state opener
No. 1 North Marion took its first step to defend its Class AAA girls’ basketball title Wednesday night.
The Huskies exploded for 42 second-half points to defeat eight-seed Ripley, 65-43, and move into Friday’s semifinals.

COLUMN: Parsons still big part of Huskies
While her name might now show up in the box score from Wednesday’s Class AAA state tournament quarterfinal win over Ripley doesn’t mean North Marion senior Jessica Parsons is forgotten.
She’s there on the bench, though not by choice, the same place she’s been since injuring her knee against rival Fairmont Senior which ended her season. She uses crutches to get around until the injury is fully healed.

FSHS falls to Mohigans in regional
After two hard-fought games between Fairmont Senior and Morgantown, there was little doubt that Tuesday’s Class AAA, Region I final would be another.
MHS’ Sam Runner blocked Logan Moore’s potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Mohigans rallied for a 43-41 win and a berth in next week’s Class AAA boys’ state tournament in Charleston.

North girls take on Ripley tonight
No. 1 North Marion’s quest for a second straight Class AAA girls’ basketball title begins tonight in Charleston at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Huskies, the No. 1 seed in the state tournament, will take on the No. 8 seeded Ripley Vikings at 7:15 p.m.

Fairmont Senior’s Ronnie Retton should be taking the floor tonight against Morgantown with a spot in next week’s state tournament on the line.

Huskies’ Byard named state player of the year
Mariah Byard has come a long way since being a ball girl for the North Marion Huskies during her elementary school years.
She joined the Huskies as a freshman and led the team to a state tournament appearance. Her sophomore year she led North Marion to the school’s first girls’ basketball state title.

Sectional champs
Two down, one to go.
The Fairmont Senior boys’ basketball team took another step toward a state tournament appearance Friday, using a huge fourth quarter en route to a gutsy 57-42 win over Preston in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 title game at Fairmont State University’s Joe Retton Arena.
Morgantown, a 45-39 loser to Wheeling Park in the other sectional final, is all that stands between the Polar Bears and a trip to Charleston.
