Polar Bears turn to running game to beat Patriots

FAIRMONT — Given its impressive numbers through the air, it may be easy to pigeonhole Fairmont Senior as some finesse, pass-happy football team.

But as the No. 5 Polar Bears showed in Friday’s Class AAA playoff opener with 12th-ranked Parkersburg South at East-West Stadium, they can play the smash-mouth game, too.

Fairmont Senior rushed for 210 yards, kept a dangerous Patriots’ attack in check on defense and got two key fourth-quarter touchdowns en route to a 35-21 victory.

The Polar Bears will host No. 13 University, a 23-0 upset winner over No. 4 Spring Valley on Friday, in next week’s playoff quarterfinals. Fairmont Senior (10-1) won the regular season matchup, 10-7 in double overtime.
