Bears score 21 in 4th to down Bees

FAIRMONT — The 89th annual East-West game had all the makings of a classic chapter in this historic rivalry.

At least for the first 36 minutes.

The No. 4 ranked Fairmont Senior Polar Bears (9-1), a heavy favorite over the 3-7 East Fairmont Bees, entered the fourth and final quarter with only a 9-0 lead. But 21 points in the final 12 minutes helped the Bears complete a 30-6 win over the Bees.

The second-consecutive win in the series also gave the Bears their first North Central Athletic Conference title in 14 years.

    Fairmont Senior rallied for four runs in the sixth inning while advancing their way to the state tournament yet again with a 4-0 victory over John Marshall in the Class AAA Region I final on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park.

    The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are riding plenty of momentum into today’s Region I baseball final versus John Marshall.
    The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
