‘Unique’ group sets sights on state title

RIVESVILLE — Fairmont Senior’s soccer upperclassmen, particularly its senior players, are the backbone of this year’s team.

But if you talk to head coach Jim DeNardi or assistant Darrin Paul, they’re the team’s funny bone, too.

“This is a very unique group of seniors,” Paul said. “They march to the beat of a different drum. That’s kind of the best way to put it.”

Or maybe senior forward Brooks Nucilli can explain it best.

“We’re all goofs,” he said with a quick smile during a break from Wednesday’s practice in Rivesville.

    The No. 7 Polar Bears and Lincoln played a close, hard-fought game before FSHS finally broke open a close game in the second half to defeat the Cougars, 61-44.

    For a time Thursday night, it didn’t look like George Washington would miss a basket in its Class AAA boys’ semifinal of the Big Atlantic Classic at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

    The North Marion freshman boys’ basketball team slipped past Philip Barbour Tuesday for a 54-49 victory.
    The Huskies were led by Shawn Elliott, who finished with a team best 13 points and three rebounds.

    Fairmont Senior ran its dual-match record to 28-11 Thursday night with a hard-fought 37-29 victory over cross-town rival East Fairmont.
    The Polar Bears, who dropped out of the wvmat.com state rankings this week, won eight matches and notched four falls.

    It will come as part of an Alderson-Broaddus football program that is reviving the sport at the Philippi school this year for the first time since 1930.
