Polar Bear spikers fall to Lincoln

FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior’s volleyball team fell to Lincoln in three games Wednesday, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-16.

Allie Fetty led the Polar Bears with six kills, two aces and an assist. Taylor Richardson had six kills and an ace, Valarie Summers had a pair of kills and aces, Courtney Suplita had three kills, Cori Cumberland finished with a kill and two aces, Bridget Ford had 12 digs and three aces, Kylee Linger had two assists and a kill, Briana Chaney finished with three kills and Beth Ann Haymond had a kill in the match.

    East Fairmont’s boys’ basketball team bounced back from a tough overtime loss to rival Fairmont Senior to cruise by Big 10 foe Lewis County Friday, thanks to 22-point efforts from both Joseph Casalinuova and Seth Corwin.

    Fairmont Senior girls’ head basketball coach Corey Hines knew coming into Thursday night’s contest that his team couldn’t overlook visiting Class AA Lincoln.
    The No. 7 Polar Bears and Lincoln played a close, hard-fought game before FSHS finally broke open a close game in the second half to defeat the Cougars, 61-44.

    For a time Thursday night, it didn’t look like George Washington would miss a basket in its Class AAA boys’ semifinal of the Big Atlantic Classic at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
    And it looked like Fairmont Senior wouldn’t make one.

    The North Marion freshman boys’ basketball team slipped past Philip Barbour Tuesday for a 54-49 victory.
    The Huskies were led by Shawn Elliott, who finished with a team best 13 points and three rebounds.

    Fairmont Senior ran its dual-match record to 28-11 Thursday night with a hard-fought 37-29 victory over cross-town rival East Fairmont.
    The Polar Bears, who dropped out of the wvmat.com state rankings this week, won eight matches and notched four falls.

    That sounds like a mismatch on paper, but when these two teams hook up, you can throw the records out the window.

    North Marion High School football coach Daran Hays has no doubt that linebacker Kaleb Cunningham’s best football lies ahead.
    It will come as part of an Alderson-Broaddus football program that is reviving the sport at the Philippi school this year for the first time since 1930.
