Mohigans fall to Capital; late blitz lifts SC

CHARLESTON —  

George Burkes scored 16 points and Capital never trailed in beating Morgantown 54-39 in the Class AAA quarterfinals Thursday.

Fourth-seeded Capital (20-4) advanced to the semifinals for the second time in three seasons and will meet top-seeded Logan (23-3) on Friday.

Sam Jones added 12 points for Capital and Mark Hale scored 10.

Jordan Barnett had 11 points and Sam Runner grabbed 10 rebounds for fifth-seeded Morgantown (19-5).

Capital led 29-20 at halftime. Morgantown twice closed the gap to six points in the third quarter before Capital went on a 7-1 run and was never threatened again.

South Charleston 49, George Washington 44

Pierria Henry scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and South Charleston scored the final 11 points of the game to beat Kanawha County rival George Washington in the Class AAA quarterfinals Thursday night.

Sixth-seeded South Charleston (20-5) will meet No. 2 Wheeling Park (22-2) in Friday’s semifinals.

South Charleston trailed 25-23 at halftime and scored the next seven points.

Most of the fourth quarter belonged to third-seeded George Washington (21-5), which scored five straight to go ahead 44-38 on a free throw by Tyquane Goard with 2:28 left. But the Patriots didn’t score again.

Tino diTrapano led George Washington with 13 points and Goard had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Class A

Parkersburg Cath. 25, Fayetteville 20

Cole Cwynar scored 11 points and Parkersburg Catholic beat Fayetteville Thursday in the lowest-scoring boys Class A tournament game since the current three-class system began in 1959.

The combined 45 points demolished the Class A record of 79 set by Piedmont and Union Monroe in 1969.

Both teams shot poorly: Parkersburg Catholic made 26 percent (9 of 35) of its field-goal attempts and seventh-seeded Fayetteville made 22 percent. None hit more than 50 percent of its free throws, either.

No team led by more than five points. Parkersburg Catholic had a 16-15 edge at halftime and 22-18 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Second-seeded Parkersburg Catholic (21-3) will meet No. 3 Tucker County (17-1) in Friday’s semifinals.

Tucker County 54, Midland Trail 51, OT

Logan Snyder scored five of his 27 points in overtime and third-seeded Tucker County beat No. 6 Midland Trail in the Class A quarterfinals Thursday.

Tucker County outscored Midland Trail 18-5 in the third quarter to lead by eight, and then Joey Fox’s jumper for Midland Trail with 22 seconds left sent the game into overtime tied at 47-47.

Josh Poling added 11 points for Tucker County (17-1).

Fox led Midland Trail (14-6) with 17 points and Kelly Minter scored 13. 

Wheeling Central 59, Notre Dame 52

Jordan Sorge scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half to lead Wheeling Central to a win over Notre Dame in the Class A quarterfinals Thursday night.

Fourth-seeded Wheeling Central is (13-11) going after its third straight title and seventh since 2002. 

Notre Dame led 22-19 at halftime but fell flat in the third quarter, going scoreless over the final 5 minutes.

Zack Hood added 14 points for Wheeling Central.

Nolan Tucci scored 14 points and Caesar Goodman had 11 points and 11 rebounds for No. 5 Notre Dame (16-5).

Charleston Cath. 50, Gilbert 35 

Sam Wood scored 16 points, Seth Ritchie added 15 and top-seeded Charleston Catholic beat Gilbert in the Class A quarterfinals Thursday night.

Two free throws by Logan Riley put Charleston Catholic (20-4) ahead to stay, 16-14, with 4:24 left until halftime.

The Irish scored the first 14 points of the second half to take their largest lead, 37-12. Gilbert, though, answered with a 14-2 run. 

Charleston Catholic scored nine of the final 11 points, including six by McKown.

Kyle Smith led eighth-seeded Gilbert (12-10) with 15 points and Ryan Altizer scored 11.

    Just four years ago, I was in these players’ shoes. It’s weird because instead of getting interviewed, I am the one conducting the interviews.     The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
