Roman named Big 10’s top player

County players dot all-league soccer squads

FAIRMONT — East Fairmont boys’ soccer had its best season in school history in 2012.

On Thursday, the Bees were rewarded for it in a big way, as the team won both Big 10 individual honors and placed six players on the league’s first or second teams.

East senior midfielder Jesse Roman was named Big 10 Player of the Year, and his father, Fred Roman, nabbed Coach of the Year honors after the Bees won their first regular-season conference championship.

Fellow Bee senior Cutter Atha also earned a spot on the first team. Two other Marion County players — Fairmont Senior’s Grant Holbert and North Marion’s Dylan Leary — also made the first team.

    Trefz took home the gold in the 3,200 meters in Charleston on Friday with a time of 9:36.21.

    That’s exactly what former Fairmont Senior first baseman Tyler Walter did during his freshman season at Hagerstown Community College in Maryland.
    “I wanted to get an opportunity and needed to prove that I belonged,” Walter said.
