Polar Bear girls battle, best Lincoln: VIDEO AND PHOTOS

FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior girls’ head basketball coach Corey Hines knew coming into Thursday night’s contest that his team couldn’t overlook visiting Class AA Lincoln.

The No. 7 Polar Bears and Lincoln played a close, hard-fought game before FSHS finally broke open a close game in the second half to defeat the Cougars, 61-44.

“That’s a very tough team,” Hines said. “They are one of the best AA teams around here, and they play in all our summer leagues and tournaments. They are a team I root for, except when they are playing us. So this is a nice win. A hard-fought win for us.”

It was slow going in the first half for both teams.

    Fairmont Senior rallied for four runs in the sixth inning while advancing their way to the state tournament yet again with a 4-0 victory over John Marshall in the Class AAA Region I final on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park.

    The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are riding plenty of momentum into today’s Region I baseball final versus John Marshall.
    The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
