RACHEL — What do you get when you put two of the most successful girls’ basketball programs in the state in recent years together in the same gym?
Anyone who’s seen a North Marion-Huntington High game since 2009 knows that answer: a hard-fought, down-to-the-wire contest.
Saturday was no different as the Highlanders escaped Marion County with a 73-69 win against North in Rachel.
The rivalry was born a little more than three years ago on the biggest stage in West Virginia high school girls’ basketball in the 2009 Class AAA state championship game. North Marion’s Mariah Byard, currently a member of the Ohio University Bobcats, hit a last-second shot and cemented herself as a hardwood legend in these parts.
