Malnick has solid debut as starter

FAIRMONT — Really, Trevor Malnick’s job as Fairmont Senior quarterback isn’t all that complicated.

He doesn’t need to throw for thousands upon thousands of yards. He isn’t asked to put the Polar Bears on his back. And he certainly isn’t expected to be Jarrod Furgason, Logan Moore or any other great FSHS signal caller who has dug his cleats into the East-West Stadium turf.

Nope. The junior’s only job is to put his team in the best position to win.

“That’s all we ask him to do,” first-year Fairmont Senior coach Jared Mileto said.

And in Friday’s season opener, Malnick did just that, coming up big in key moments as the Polar Bears held off Robert C. Byrd, 28-21.

Taking over for Moore, last year’s record-breaking all-state star who is now playing at Fairmont State University, Malnick did a little bit of everything in his first start at quarterback in nearly two years.
