COLUMN: Area wrestlers should bring back hardware

FAIRMONT — For all Marion County is known for — Olympic icons, Hall of Famers, some food involving a pizza topping — it’s a pretty great place for wrestling as well.

Altogether, the area’s three high schools have crowded 89 state champions. And it’s a number made even more impressive when you consider North Marion’s at 22 champs and the school is barely 30 years old.

Expect the number to grow this weekend at the state tournament, which gets under way today at Huntington’s Big Sandy Super Store Arena.

Very good, always competitive wrestling programs in recent years in Class AAA, North, East Fairmont and Fairmont Senior have taken a step forward in the first season in AA-A.

    Oak Glen is next on the menu for the Fairmont Senior baseball squad.
    With the 11-0 win over Braxton County on Tuesday evening, and Oak Glen’s eight-inning 2-1 win over Ritchie County, the two teams find themselves squaring off against one another while fighting for a spot to play in the state tournament.

    East Fairmont softball player Kayla Summers always dreamed about playing softball in college.
    On Tuesday, Summers signed her letter of intent to play at Fairmont State University.
    “Ever since I started playing softball, I always told my parents that I was going to go to college and play softball,” she said.

    One Fairmont Senior basketball player’s dreams of playing in college has become a reality.
    On Tuesday, Travon Horton signed his letter of intent to play basketball at Fairmont State University.
    He said staying in Fairmont means a lot because of the support he has.

    The streak ends while Morgantown prevails.
    Fairmont Senior’s five-year state championship streak in lacrosse came to an abrupt end against an undefeated (15-0) Mohigan team on Saturday afternoon, 12-9.

    This time, it was the 4 x 100- and 4 x 200-meter relay teams that brought home the gold at the state meet Saturday in Charleston.

    Winning it all.
    Fairmont Senior’s senior phenom Nick Trefz can now call himself a state champion in track.
    Trefz took home the gold in the 3,200 meters in Charleston on Friday with a time of 9:36.21.

    That’s exactly what former Fairmont Senior first baseman Tyler Walter did during his freshman season at Hagerstown Community College in Maryland.
    “I wanted to get an opportunity and needed to prove that I belonged,” Walter said.
