South Charleston beats Pats in semis

CHARLESTON — Keke Allen scored nine of her 15 points in the first quarter and South Charleston cruised to a 60-50 win over Parkersburg South in the girls Class AAA semifinals Friday night.

Second-seeded South Charleston (25-1) will meet defending champion North Marion (23-1) for the title on Saturday night.

Third-seeded Parkersburg South (20-4) attempted just five shots in the first quarter and had eight turnovers. South Charleston took full advantage and led 22-7 after the period. The Black Eagles’ lead never fell below double digits after that.

Class AA

Summers County 69, Ravenswood 43

Leslie Mack scored 20 points to lead top-seeded Summers County to a victory over Ravenswood in the girls Class AA semifinals Friday.

Summers County (27-0) will go after its fourth straight championship on Saturday against No. 2 Scott (22-4). Summers County won both regular-season meetings between the teams.

Fifth-seeded Ravenswood (18-6) committed 27 turnovers and shot just 26 percent (11 of 43) from the floor. Rebekah Samples led Ravenswood with 16 points.

Scott 49, Tolsia 45

Makenzie White scored 19 points and Scott withstood a furious comeback from Tolsia for a win in the girls Class AA semifinals Friday.

Second-seeded Scott (22-4) advanced to Saturday’s championship game for the first time in school history.

Tolsia (20-7) outscored Scott 17-5 in the third quarter and pulled within 44-43 on two Katie Lahoda free throws with 3:32 left in the game. 

Class A

St. Joseph 47, Charleston Catholic 36

Sara Sang had 19 points and 14 rebounds and defending champion St. Joseph took charge after halftime to beat Charleston Catholic in the girls Class A semifinals Friday night.

Brooke Keeton added 12 points for top-seeded St. Joseph (21-5), which reached the championship game for the third straight year. It beat Charleston Catholic a year ago and lost to Wheeling Central in 2008.

Victoria Thomas had 10 points for Charleston Catholic (13-12), which committed 20 turnovers.

St. Marys 63, Tucker County 36

Sara O’Neal scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half and St. Marys used a big second quarter to beat Tucker County in the girls Class A semifinals Friday.

Second-seeded St. Marys (24-1) will play Saturday for its first championship since 1990.

St. Marys outscored Tucker County 21-4 in the second quarter to lead 35-13 at halftime.

Amber Evans led Tucker County (15-5) with 13 points.

  • HARRIS - Polar Bears have been able to adjust

    Nothing beats high school baseball and the adjustments that it takes to win.
    Just four years ago, I was in these players’ shoes. It’s weird because instead of getting interviewed, I am the one conducting the interviews. Playing against teams from Canton through Youngstown, I faced a lot of superstar talent, but everybody knows that the teams are only as good as the players.

    The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are riding plenty of momentum into today’s Region I baseball final versus John Marshall.
    The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
