FAIRMONT —
Using a combination of timely hitting and solid pitching, North Marion did what it has done each of the previous two seasons on Thursday — beat county rival Fairmont Senior 6-3 in the first game of their baseball sectional playoff series.
North took an early 1-0 lead on a Brent Osborne RBI to score Troy Shuck before Osborne worked his way out of trouble on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Fairmont Senior had runners on first and third base with one out when Osborne struck out the Polar Bears’ Trevor Malnick and Tre Kerns, both looking, to end the inning.
Shuck helped the Huskies seize the game’s momentum in the third when he blasted the first pitch of the inning over the right-centerfield fence to extend the Huskies’ lead to 2-0.
