FAIRMONT —
The longest tenured high school coach in Marion County, Bill Malone has seen a bit of everything during his 30-plus years at the helm of East Fairmont’s girls’ basketball program.
He’s had all-conference talents. He’s made state tournaments. He’s even seen one of his former players, Darcie Vincent, carve her own path as national championship coach at California (Pa.).
And he’s witnessed the full effect of Title IX on local athletics, from its humble and at times rocky beginnings in the 1970s, to the recent North Marion girls’ squad that won three straight state crowns.
“It pushed female athletic programs in the door,” Malone said of Title IX, which was implemented in 1972. “They weren’t just knocking on it; they kicked it in with Title IX. They said, ‘You have to do this.’ It’s been a great thing and it’s carried on.”

Trefz took home the gold in the 3,200 meters in Charleston on Friday with a time of 9:36.21. -

Tyler Walter making most of opportunity in college

That’s exactly what former Fairmont Senior first baseman Tyler Walter did during his freshman season at Hagerstown Community College in Maryland.
“I wanted to get an opportunity and needed to prove that I belonged,” Walter said. -
