FAIRMONT — Mariah Byard added to a stellar season Thursday, as the North Marion standout was named the Gatorade West Virginia girls’ basketball player of the year.
Byard is the second Huskies player to win the award, joining Jessica Sell in 2002.
“This one was pretty cool, too,” Byard, who won Associated Press player of the year honors last week, said. “At first I didn’t know which one I won (when state player of the year was announced). Now I know what I got and it’s really cool.
“Once I figured out which one I won the first time, I thought someone else would get it, which would be fine with me. I was honored to get one of them, but both is amazing.”
