Navy’s Bailey looking to finish strong

Former East wrestler battling back from injury

FAIRMONT — Barely a week back from a lingering injury, Mason Bailey is still working his way to full strength.

However, in some respects, the current Navy wrestler and East Fairmont grad has never been stronger.

That’s what happens when you’re forced to recover from a painful rib injury midseason. When you’re picked to lead a group of your peers, some of whom are years older. And especially when you have to say goodbye to a friend far too early.

But Bailey, a former Dutton Award winner and two-time West Virginia state champion, is taking it all in stride, starting with the rib injury that knocked him out of action earlier this season.

It happened in December at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. And while he managed to somehow finish the match where the injury first occurred, the damage was done.

    Fairmont Senior rallied for four runs in the sixth inning while advancing their way to the state tournament yet again with a 4-0 victory over John Marshall in the Class AAA Region I final on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park.

    The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are riding plenty of momentum into today’s Region I baseball final versus John Marshall.
    The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
