CHARLESTON —
Through it all in 2012, Fairmont Senior’s girls’ soccer team never stopped battling.
Not after a litany of ailments, including several serious knee injuries. Not after a rugged Class AAA-heavy schedule that tested its skills and depth. And not after being forced to face deficit after deficit once state tournament play rolled around.
Why would anything change in Wednesday’s AA-A state final?
It didn’t. The Polar Bears fought to the very last whistle — literally — but their second-half rally fell just short in a 3-2 loss to Bridgeport at Trace Fork Soccer Complex.
“We just tried to think deep and get one win. We came so close,” Fairmont Senior’s Gabi Mascaro said.
Oh, they did.
