CHARLESTON —
Jordan Haywood scored 28 points and sixth-seeded Bridgeport upset No. 3 Westside 79-71 in the Class AA quarterfinals Thursday.
Chase Robey added 13 points, Ryan Sprouse had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Tyler Sprouse scored 10 for Bridgeport. The Indians (19-7) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2007.
Justin Cogar scored 19 points, Corey Bowles had 14, Jason Scarlett had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Levi Lambert scored 11 for Westside (19-7).
Westside was making its first tournament appearance since losing in the 2005 championship game to Logan.
Washington 51, Parkersburg South 48
CHARLESTON (AP) — Keldon Bell had 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Washington made its Class AAA tournament debut a success with a 60-56 win over Parkersburg South in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Fifth-seeded Parkersburg South had taken its final lead, 51-48, on a layup by Logan Cox with 3:27 left.
Dominique Newman finished with 17 points, including a layup with 15 seconds left that put Washington ahead to stay, 58-56. Kendell Smith made two free throws with 5 seconds left to secure the win.
Smith finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
South Charleston 48, Morgantown 39
CHARLESTON (AP) — Brandon Knapper scored 16 points, Rashaud Kincade added 15 points and South Charleston beat Morgantown 48-39 in the Class AAA quarterfinals Thursday night.
The third-seeded Black Eagles (24-2) will meet No. 2 Woodrow Wilson in Friday’s semifinals. South Charleston returns to the semifinals for the first time since 2010.
A.D. Cunningham added 10 points and 11 rebounds for South Charleston.
Nathan Adrian had 17 points and 17 rebounds for sixth-seeded Morgantown (19-7).
Robert C. Byrd 51, Tolsia 44
CHARLESTON (AP) — Devonti Birch scored 13 points to lead Robert C. Byrd to a 51-44 win over Tolsia in the Class AA quarterfinals Thursday night.
Robert C. Byrd (20-6) advanced to the tournament semifinals for the first time since 1996. The Eagles had lost in the quarterfinals in their seven previous tries.
Fourth-seeded Robert C. Byrd will meet top-seeded Bluefield on Friday night.
Tolsia trailed by 17 points in the fourth quarter before making a furious comeback. Terry Davis made two free throws to cap a 17-4 run that brought the Rebels within 48-44 with 23 seconds left. But Tolsia didn’t score again.

Polar Bees, one player suggested — a combination of Polar Bears and Bees. -
DeVaul earns All-Mon Player of the Year
He has many names — “Polo,” “Captain,” “Mr. Clutch” — but in this City of Fairmont where he reigns as king, he is simply known as “Fletcher DeVaul.”
But today, DeVaul is earning yet another award. He has been selected as the 2013 Times West Virginian All-Mon baseball player of the year. -
Hrapchak now a Polar Bear
Luke Hrapchak is no longer an East Fairmont Bee.
The 6-3, 225-pound running back and middle linebacker has moved across the river to Polar Bear country.
This was news that made Fairmont Senior’s head coach JL Abbott excited. -
Fairmont Post 17 rallies past Wheeling
Fairmont Legion Post 17 was hootin’ and hollerin' following its come-from-behind win over Wheeling Legion Post 3 on Wednesday, 6-5.
“This win should get us some momentum,” Fairmont Post 17’s head coach Marty Morgan said. -
Fluharty named All-Mon softball player of the year
“Move in! The girl is up,” the Little League boys taunted when Danielle Fluharty stepped to the plate.
Outfielders hurried in to the edge of the infield and the third baseman inched closer and closer to Fluharty, the only girl on her youth baseball team. -
East Fairmont’s Jimmie dominates in his senior season
