Teams forced to dig deep at Jam Fest

FAIRMONT — To be able to win tournaments, teams have to be able to grind. For some squads at the Hoop Group Jam Fest, that meant playing three games per day, two days in a row.

Elimination play took place Friday at the Feaster Center and Falcon Center on the Fairmont State University campus, with teams from all over trying to survive and move on to the next round of the tournament.

West Virginia Reign, a team made up of several players from the Fairmont area, including Anthony Osbourn (Fairmont Senior) as well as Joseph Casalinuova (East Fairmont), Seth Corwin and Evan Gorman (both also from East, but neither was able to attend Friday) as well as other parts of the state, was a very late entry in to this tournament and did not have much time to prepare for the weekend. Coach Roger Osbourn said they didn’t have an opportunity to practice, but they’re using their proximity to home to their advantage.

    Fairmont Senior rallied for four runs in the sixth inning while advancing their way to the state tournament yet again with a 4-0 victory over John Marshall in the Class AAA Region I final on Thursday night at Mary Lou Retton Park.

    The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are riding plenty of momentum into today’s Region I baseball final versus John Marshall.
    The last time the Polar Bears faced the Monarchs with a trip to the state tournament on the line was the 2009 regional final, where the Monarchs prevailed in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3-2.
