Best of the best

Local standouts represent county in North vs. South golf match

FAIRMONT — North Marion’s Caleb Lee and Fairmont Senior’s Sterling Fitzwater took their talents to Beckley in the North versus South All-Star golf match held at The Resort at Glade Springs on Saturday.

The match took the best of the best golfers from West Virginia while separating them into two regions: North versus South.

Just eight golfers from each area represented the team, so the best 16 golfers in the state were on hand.

“I was the very first person to represent North Marion High School in the North vs. South match,” Lee said. “It was a great honor and I’m very privileged to not only honor North Marion High School, but also Marion County. It was a great experience, and hopefully the next few years, kids from North Marion will have the privilege of playing in that match.”

Fairmont Senior’s Fitzwater was among a few juniors able to partake in the event.

“It was huge,” Fitzwater said. “I enjoyed it a lot. Just going down there and playing with the best of the best is an honor in itself. It probably was one of the best experiences of my life. It was a lot of fun and it was cool to be down there in that atmosphere.”

This year’s match represents the fourth time North played South. Prior to Saturday’s match, North was down 2-1 in terms of wins each year. The North team won the first year and the South has won the event the past two years.
