CHARLESTON —
Too much, too soon.
It’s a scenario Fairmont Senior’s boys’ soccer team wanted to avoid heading into the Class AA-A state title game with Charleston Catholic. But that was exactly what happened once Wednesday morning’s match began.
The Irish got off to a blistering start, scoring three times in the first 15 minutes, and rolled to another state championship with a 5-0 victory over the Polar Bears at Trace Fork Soccer Complex.
The victory increases Charleston Catholic’s years-long streak without a loss to 55 games. The Irish also became the first boys’ soccer program in the state to capture four straight state titles.
“It’s mind boggling we would have a record like this over the last two-plus years,” Charleston Catholic coach Sam Fox said. “It hasn’t sunk in with me.”
