CHARLESTON — No. 1 North Marion took its first step to defend its Class AAA girls’ basketball title Wednesday night.
The Huskies exploded for 42 second-half points to defeat eight-seed Ripley, 65-43, and move into Friday’s semifinals.
“We always talk about coming out of halftime with some fire and making a run,” North Marion head coach Mike Parrish said. “We got the ball inside and that opened up the perimeter shooting.”
The Ripley Vikings hit the first shot of the game — a 3-pointer from Samantha Hatcher with 7:31 to go in the first quarter. The North Marion defense then clamped down on the Vikings and didn’t alllow another basket until Hatcher hit another with 4:05 to go — in the second quarter. That’s nearly 11 minutes North held their opponent scoreless.
