Fairmont Senior’s boys’ basketball team seemed discombobulated Saturday in its loss at home against University, 82-67.
The Polar Bears came into the season with high expectations as one of the favorites to win a Big 10 title and make a push for a state championship run.
But having a team come into the Woody Williams Armory (FSHS’s home court) and put up 82 points is unacceptable — even for a team of University’s caliber.
The result of the loss?
Fairmont didn’t play good defense, allowing rebound after rebound — which resulted in more baskets for the Hawks, since they had more opportunities in actually throwing the ball into the ocean.
“We always look at things that we can control, and I thought that our offensive rebounding hurt us really bad,” said Fairmont Senior head coach Dave Retton. “Defensively, when we give up 82 points in a game, you’re going to be hard pressed to win high school games when you’re giving up that many points. That’s the biggest thing that disappointed me most about our team and our performance.
“You can’t give a team opportunity after opportunity,” he continued. “After the first quarter, they had a lot of offensive rebounds, which hurt us. The second shot is closer than the first one and then the third shot is closer than the second one.”
Because of the lack of rebounding in the first quarter, FSHS was playing constant comeback. Trying to catch up, the Polar Bears had to force shots instead of taking their time, as opposed to UHS where they could run an offense that could kick the ball down low and finish with a layup.
