COLUMN: A few predictions for ’12 season

FAIRMONT — In some respect, predicting sports is nothing more than one big question mark.

In another, there are those times when you know what will happen before it happens.

Like when West Virginia University and Marshall play in football — no matter what, the Mountaineers are winning.

Or when the Pirates are trailing or tied in the late innings and manager Clint Hurdle needs a reliever — 99.9 percent of the time, skip is foolishly saving stars Jason Grilli and Joel Hanrahan for a lead.

Attempting to figure out high school sports doesn’t come as easily.

You’re not sure how a kid will fare with the jump from jayvee to varsity. Or how a football player will react after being hit for the first time. Or how a girls’ lacrosse team will handle a playoff game just hours before prom night.

You just don’t know.

Neither do I, job title be damned.
