Fairmont Senior girls’ soccer tied the University Hawks 1-1 at Duvall-Rosier Field on Monday.
Throughout the first half, the Polar Bears were unable to capitalize on six shot attempts.
“We just needed to capitalize on our offensive shots more than anything,” said Fairmont Senior assistant coach Ryann Moore. “It’s been a problem this season with finishing the shots. We out-play teams and we get them tired, but when we send the ball toward the goal, there’s not someone in the right place to make the finish. That’s something that we need to work on.”
Even though the Polar Bears couldn’t find the net, goalie Kayla DeLorenzo had a field day in terms of diving and brawling for balls that should have entered the net.
In the first half alone, DeLorenzo notched three saves out of the five shot attempts University took.
“Our defense played tough today,” Moore said. “The girls showed a lot of heart out there.”
Because of the defensive battle, both teams were knotted up at 0-0 heading into halftime.
Following the 10-minute halftime break, University’s Alyssa Chafin came out flaming hot. She took a fast break and drilled a goal with 26:35 remaining in the game. The shot gave the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
“The one play that they scored on was a fast break, so that would be considered a defensive error,” Moore stated. “After the goal our girls played tough and kept it up during the remainder of the game.”
Even though the Hawks jumped to a 1-0 lead, the Polar Bears were determined to score a goal of their own.
Freshman Megan Witt did just that.
