FAIRMONT —
The North Marion golf team broke its 27-year drought Monday, winning the Big 10 Championship at Clarksburg Country Club.
The Huskies shot a team high 326.
“Winning this today is hard to explain,” North Marion senior captain Caleb Lee said Monday. “Knowing that we’re Big 10 champs for the first time at North Marion High School since 1985 is a great honor. It just shows that we had a lot of really hard work and it finally paid off for us. We showed that we worked hard all year.”
The Huskies’ seniors have battled through adversity during their tenure with the program and they finally get to see that hard work pays off in the end.
“This win feels pretty awesome,” said North Marion head coach Chance Hearn. “We always walk into the gym and look at the banners, and there are so many banners in the Huskies gym from all of the great teams. The banners showcase the great athletes that we’ve had in the past. For me personally, being the coach for 13 years and never getting to add anything to the banners feels good to say that we are making an impact in our athletic department.
“The fact that it was this group of kids that did it makes it special because they have been extremely successful in their four years at North Marion High School,” Hearn added. “This is the second conference tournament that they won. Unfortunately the first one that they won, there was a playoff and the NCAC determined the outright champion and we fell short. Of course, last year we finished runner-up, so these guys have really done well for themselves.”

‘Heisman curse’ may come to an end
When you hear the term “Heisman Trophy,” you think of Desmond Howard striking the pose in the end zone against Ohio State in the 1991 football season. You think of Tim Tebow’s speech following the loss to Ole Miss. You think of the hail mary from Doug Flutie to Gerard Phelan that gave Boston College the win over the Miami Hurricanes.
