FAIRMONT —
Moving on to the next round — sectional final.
East Fairmont’s girls’ soccer team defeated North Marion on Thursday night at East-West Stadium, 3-0.
This win enables the Bees an opportunity of playing the winner of Fairmont Senior versus Trinity on Saturday.
“This win definitely means a lot for us heading into Saturday,” said senior captain Nicole Licata. “We lost to North the first time we played, so to come back and to beat them 3-0 is definitely a big win. We really want to go all the way this year, so in order to do that, we had to win today.”
During the first round of sectional play, the Bees jumped on the Huskies fast.
East’s Licata slashed and dashed her way through the North Marion defense. After a 50-yard dribbling clinic, Licata drilled the kick straight into the net with 26:23 remaining in the first half.
“I saw the ball and the goal, and I knew that we needed to score in order to win,” said Licata. “I just gave it all I had and kicked the ball as hard as I could and the ball went in.”
East Fairmont’s head coach Mark Harvath added, “That goal was a great individual effort. Nicole’s the type of girl that’s a special player. That goal there was all about heart and determination. She fought through the defense and put the ball home. That’s just a mark of a good player.”
The Huskies had a chance to respond with a few shots of their own, but couldn’t get it done.
With 15:30 remaining in the first, North Marion committed an ultimate no-no.
