Bears’ Trefz turns into top runner

Area athletes earn Big 10 all-league honors

FAIRMONT — For an athlete who in some ways has come out of nowhere, Nick Trefz has certainly warmed to the spotlight.

“It’s fine. I kind of like it,” Trefz, the Fairmont Senior boys’ senior standout said earlier this month at the Times Invitational.

Maybe that has something to do with his low-key demeanor, like when a reporter asked him how he was preparing for the rest of the season, which continues this afternoon with the Region I meet at Doddridge County Park.

“I’m just going to go run. You worry too much about it, you’ll psych yourself out,” he said.

Or maybe it is because he hasn’t processed it all, as he’s gone from an unknown sophomore during his first year of varsity track to a contender for big success in both the upcoming Class A-AA state cross country meet or next season’s state track championships.
