Huskies, Bears set for states

FAIRMONT — Whatever happens over the next three days at the Charleston Civic Center, Marion County has already made its mark on the girls’ state tournament.

That is because not one, but two area schools descend on the Capital City today as the Class AA portion of the event begins. North Marion is making its first appearance in two years since its remarkable run of three straight triple-A titles from 2009-11; Fairmont Senior, meanwhile, hasn’t made the trip south since 2006.

While Class AAA and A games got under way on Wednesday, the sixth-seeded Huskies get an early start this morning when they take on No. 3 Nicholas County at 9:30 a.m. In today’s other contest involving an area school, No. 5 Fairmont Senior plays No. 4 Clay County (18-6) in the 9 p.m. nightcap.

North (18-4) has a trio of double-digit scorers in senior Audia Bartlett, junior Anna Moscufo and freshman Megan Haller, along with a deep and varied bench featuring the likes of sharp-shooters Cara Egress and Chelsea Swiger.

The Huskies also boast one of the longest current winning streaks in West Virginia, boys or girls, heading into states — a 13-game run dating back nearly two months. North hasn’t lost a game since Jan. 11, when it lost by five (45-40) to last year’s Class AAA runner-up and Big 10 foe Bridgeport.

Of those 13 wins, nine have been by 10 points or more.

North will be going up against a Nicholas (20-3) squad making its first state tournament appearance since 2001.
