For Fairmont State’s Kathryn Saurborn, swimming at a high level is just another day in the pool.
The senior sensation from East Fairmont High School is becoming one of the best swimmers in Fairmont State’s history.
Last year, as a junior, Saurborn placed in the top eight in the 50 free and qualified in the top 10 for 100 freestyle.
This year, she is on track to do even more.
“I got invited last year for my 50 freestyle and I got eighth, which is considered to be an All-American in the 50,” Saurborn said. “In the 100 freestyle, I also swam and got 10th. I also swam the 100 in butterflies, and I didn’t place in that one.
“This year, I’ve qualified for the same events, but this year, I actually got the A-cut in the 50 freestyle.”
The circumstance that separates Saurborn from just a season ago? This year, she’s been able to shave .04 of a second from her time, putting her as the fourth fastest time in the country in the 50 free.
That’s right — in the country.
Because of her rigorous workouts, it’s taken her from a really good swimmer to one of the best in the nation.
“Just training in general, I’ve trained a lot more than I had in the previous years,” Saurborn said. “This is the first year that I didn’t take a small break during Christmas break. I trained through it. Each year, I’m getting stronger, so lifting is essential. Also running. I did that a lot throughout the summer and throughout this semester.”
Although she passed on relaxing during Christmas break, her workout looks like something of an Olympian — it resembles a Michael Phelps workout.
From dusk until dawn, Saurborn works on her game.
